How to say “Bless You” in Russian?

I recently saw the following question on Yahoo Answers and thought it would be perfect for a short article and another video: “How to say BLESS YOU in Russian?” Is there a difference between saying BLESS YOU in Russian formal and informal way? How is it written in Russian alphabet and how is it pronounced? Anything specific about using it or is it pretty much the same?

Russians use BLESS YOU in the very same situations as here, i.e. if someone sneezes it is polite to say BLESS YOU in Russian. As you might already know Russians differentiate between formal and informal ways of address, and saying Bless You is not an exception. To say it in a formal way addressing to your manager, boss, a person much older than you are or as a sign of respect, you should say БУДЬТЕ ЗДОРОВЫ / BOOT’-TYE ZDAH-ROH-VEE. It is interesting that literally we are actually saying “Be healthy”. Now saying the same to a female friend of yours would be БУДЬ ЗДОРОВА pronounced in English as BOOT’ ZDAH-ROH-VAH. The same phrase addressing a male informally would be БУДЬ ЗДОРОВ pronounced in English as BOOT’ ZDAH-ROH-F. All of them literally mean “be healthy” in Russian and are used as an equivalent of saying “Bless you”.

I also recorded a video lesson so that you can learn how to say Bless You in Russian by watching me say it at a regular speed and a little slower as well as repeating it a number of times for you to listen and repeat.
