How to say HAPPY NEW YEAR in Russian

Welcome to another video by Prime Language Services. New Year is approaching fast and we want you to be ready to congratulate your dear family and friends with this holiday by teaching you how to say HAPPY NEW YEAR in Russian. You might want to ask if it is difficult to learn how to say Happy New Year. And the good news for you: it is super simple and with my help you will master it in less than a minute.

As a start I would like to remind you that the New Year in Eastern Europe arrives before Christmas, which might seem unusual to those residing in the West. Russia celebrates Christmas according to the Old Calendar on January, 7th and comparing it to New Year’s the celebration is much smaller. So remember that for a Russian New Year’s is one of the most important holidays. Many stay up until 4 a.m. or so to meet New Year’s by listening to the chimes of Kuranti on the Red Square at midnight Moscow time broadcasted all over Russia, have a traditional Russian feast, and watch one of many concerts on the TV.

To say HAPPY NEW YEAR in Russian say С НОВЫМ ГОДОМ pronounced as S NOH-VYM GOH-DAH-M. First syllables in both words are stressed. Also when we say it fast that “S” in the beginning is pronounced very closely with the word “noh-vym” and often merges with it, which makes it sound as one word.

Literally in Russian we are saying “with New Year” meaning “I congratulate you with New Year”. Keep in mind that it is a common way of expressing “Happy Holidays” in Russian, with holidays being New Year, Christmas, Birthday, Easter, etc.

If we think a little bit about grammar, then preposition С / with requires Instrumental Case to follow it, hence the endings.

Often Russian do not only say Happy New Year, but they also add Happy Happiness (lit.) with wishes of happiness in the New Year. To say so start with what we already learned С НОВЫМ ГОДОМ / S NOH-VYM GOH-DAH-M and add С НОВЫМ СЧАСТЬЕМ / S NOH-VYM S-SCHAH-S-TYEM.
