Russian for Adoptive Parents. Lesson 1: Terms of Endearment

Prime Language Services, an online Russian language school, where you meet with the Russian Teacher live one-on-one via web camera is happy to present an insight to Lesson 1 one of a Russian course called “Russian for Adoptive Parents”. If you are adopting or have recently adopted from Russia, then “Russian for Adoptive Parents” would be excellent for you.

I have worked with many adoptive families and their learning of basic Russian helped to ease the transition, bond and create a very special relationship with the child. We are not going to spend hours learning grammar, instead we will learn how to communicate with the Russian kid and in other adoption related situations.

What is one of the easiest ways to increase bonding and make your baby feel very special? – It’s simple. Every time you see the child use some terms of endearment in a language, familiar to the baby. One of these terms might even become so natural and stay in your family for lifetime. This Russian word will always show your very special love and relationship to the baby. So let’s get started.

One of my favorite tender words I often use with my little girl is SOHL-NEESH-KAH, which means SUNSHINE. Literally we are saying “little sun”. To make it even more personal add MAH-YO, which means MY and you will say “my sunshine” – MAH-YO SOHL-NEESH-KAH.

If you would like to praise your baby and provide positive reinforcement, say MAH-LAH-DYETS, meaning “attaboy” or “attagirl” equivalent to “great job” in English.

KAH-TYO-NOHK – “kitty”; MEE-SHOH-NAHK – “small mouse”; MYED-VYE-ZHOH-NAHK – “small bear” can all be used as terms of endearment. It is also very much about your tone and intonation that makes these special.

Now it is also important to be able to say “I love you” to the baby, which is YA TEE-BYA LYOUB-LYOU. YA is “I”, TEE-BYA is “you” (in this particular context) and LYOUB-LYOU is “LOVE” (when used with pronoun “I” as in “I love”.) Make it “I love you very much” by adding one additional word OH-CHEEN before the word “love”. YA
YA TEE-BYA OH-CHEEN LYOUB-LYOU.

I hope this article and video helped you a little. If there is anything in particular you would like to learn how to say in Russian, post a comment here or send us an email at requests@PrimeLanguageServices.com
